Sadaf Sadiq- Week 3- Section 3

Sadaf Sadiq

Week 3 Reading

This weeks’ readings seem to be centered around Hmong Americans and their role in education in particular. Reading Manee Moua’s Navigating Graduate Education as a First Generation, Hmong American Woman: An Autoethnography, showed the disparities that ethnic minorities still have to face even after making their way into such coveted research positions. In the reading Moua shares a vignette of how she received a research assistant position to help a faculty (11). And as many Asian Americans know, we do not want to be seen as incompetent so we work harder than most and always offer our services to be seen as accommodating and worthy of support. However, Moua’s faculty advisor doubted her pursuit of a PhD because of this characteristic willfulness to not look like a slacker. Moua never brought up the real reasons she came off like this to her advisor, but luckily they became close colleagues and friends. This is not the case for every timid but hardworking individual though. From first hand experience, many Asian Americans or ethnic minorities are afraid of speaking up and denying the misconceptions that are placed on them. Only by being confident and voicing our opinions will we be able to fight stigmatizations and educate those that in a higher position than us.

Question: What countries are considered Pacific Islanders and are they classified as Asian?
