In this weeks reading about the corporatization
of universities, we explore different accounts of how universities are run.
With Amy Block Joy’s case of being a whistleblower to learning about the
different ways that big business is slowly incorporating into the system. In Why We Should Fear University, Inc we
learn about the practice that universities have been hiring more administrative
positions rather than professors and how big business such as Starbucks, Nike,
and Ticketmaster have been slowly entering the university systems. This leads
others to view the university as a for-profit organization.
Another way this can be seen at
universities, is the constant building and renovating of buildings on campus. Here
at UC Davis and even UC Berkeley, where I frequently visit, there is always at
least one or two sites of construction. Whether these renovations are for
matters of safety such as making sure something is seismically sound or if they
are just for the sake of having new buildings are two different matters. Having
the newest buildings and the best technology makes a university appear more
desirable to others and thus allows them to profit more with things such as
increased student population and student fees.
Q:
What ways as students can we fight this notion of corporatization of
universities, whether it be having more professors or the constant need for
renovation?
