Week 4

Alex Truong

Section 2

In the excerpt from Whistleblower by Amy Block Joy, Amy Block Joy portrayed how corrupt an institution that is intended to help people really be. This article was about Amy whistleblowing the University of California, Davis. The corruption within the University is unbelievable because the rich were getting richer, illegally. In addition to that, when Amy attempted to expose the University she was met with demands from her boss to keep things quiet. In this time, she felt as if she was somehow in the wrong, when she had done nothing illegal and in fact done the right thing. Why did her coworkers and fellow staff keep quiet when they were aware? This makes me think of they saying, "If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor." If the workers banded together and reported their boss there would be little consequences.

This excerpt is chilling because wasn't Amy Block Joy doing the right thing in the situation? Why was she being harassed and targeting for exposing the corruption within the university? This is significant because it shows the silencing of minorities and how others in "superior" positions can get away with almost anything.

This leads me to question how many people are out there in these Universities that are corrupt? How can we better our schools and potentially rid or lower the corruption?
