Week 5 - Anna Yang

Anna Yang
ASA002 Sec 2
Week 5

In the “Empire of Death and the Plague of Civic Violence by Darrell Y. Hamamoto, the article discusses serial killers and their violent murders on Asian people. Many of the killers had a past in the military. It was a piece that made me shocked, confused, and honestly disgusted. It shocked me because all these killings were very dehumanizing and wrong. I was also confused on how anyone can just take away and life and not feel remorseful. Reading these stories, I got a sense of how white-supremacy was prevalent. Which I believe, led to their desire to control and take advantage of Asian women. The killings they made overseas somehow did not stop when they got back home. Analyzing this story, it made me realize how much trauma one can experience from war. It brings back violent reminders that are not good for anyone to remember. This messes with their psychological mind and allows them to think that killing people is okay. Also, it was shocking to learn how many of the killers were targeting Asian woman. Personally, as an Asian woman I feel like, through media and how others perceive Asian people, we are seen as obedient and submissive. It was horrifying to learn how because of this ongoing stereotype that they have in their mind, Asian woman are seen as an object that they can use and dispose of.

Question: Should we blame the killers directly for their actions or for the experience that made them become like this?
