Week 4
Section A02
In the article
“Whistleblower” by Amy Block Joy, she talks about her experience with working
for a University, most specially for UC Davis and discovering about the corruption
and fraud that has been going on. In her article, Joy specifically stated that
she found out that the University of California had been doing illegal acts of
embezzlement. When she tried to address this issue with her boss, she was told
to wait and to not “discuss these matters with anyone”. When she was at a loss
for words and wanting to discuss these matters with someone, her so-called
friends and co-workers at the university turned their backs at her and started
to avoid her. As a current student of UC Davis, this makes me wonder if history
will repeat itself. I have been constantly hearing people talk about how the UC
systems are all in need of money, which is why they are admitting more and more
international students since they pay double of our in state tuition. Now,
after reading the article by Joy, this makes me believe that maybe the UC
systems are not all innocent. If the UC system were to be doing embezzlement,
it would make me truly disappointed and enraged because my parents and the
parents of other students spent thousands of their hard earned money on our
tuition, leading some to be in debt for years. If the UC’s are using our
tuition money for their own personal benefit, it would be truly distasteful
because we pay high fees for our classes, and sometimes, we do not even end up
getting in our classes since there can only be a certain number of students per
class, leaving many students waitlisted. By being waitlisted, they have to take
other classes that they do not need to satisfy their units, which means more
money for the university. I want to believe that universities are set up to
truly benefit students, but with all the scandals that are exposing their
intentions, it truly makes me wonder if universities have their student’s best
interests at heart.
Question: With
many things being out of students control involving university matters, how do
we have a say in what the school uses our tuition money for?
