Week 4
A Tale of Two Campuses, by Alan Markow, displays the reactions by two campuses after students of each university took part in Occupy movements. The two campuses specifically are University of California - Berkeley and University of California - Davis. This paper contrasts the public statements made by each campus. The statement from Berkeley shows the work done by the UC system to help middle-class families. It displays the new Middle Class access plan which would help families manage their tuition fees by having the amount paid capped at a maximum of 15 percent of their income. Whereas the statement from Davis took on a harsh tone. It highlights the damage caused by the protest and the amount of work needed to repair the location where the protest took place.
As a student of UC Davis, I was astonished when I read the statement from my own administration. By creating such a statement they are distancing themselves from the student body. Plus a couple years down the line, in present day, the campus administration votes to have another tuition hike. I don't know what to say. Hopefully the new chancellor can do something about this.
Question: Which does the UC Davis administration care for more the students or lining their own pockets?
