Week 4-Iris Wu

Iris Wu
Section A01
Week 4

This week’s readings talked about corruption and unrevealed problems of University of California, especially of UC Davis. Among the readings, I was most impressed by “Whistle blower”, where Amy Block Joy described her experience of seeing her coworkers involve in corruption but had no one to reach out for. She wanted to reveal the secret but ended up being singled out. Another serious issue was talked about in the article "Why We Should Fear University, Inc.,”. Fredrik deBoer revealed that universities have been hiring a lot more administrative officers instead of academic professors, while the number of professors are seriously in short.

The first thing that came to mind after reading about all the resource misuse in UCD was the building reconstruction issue. It was said that school was planning on reconstructing Harring Hall for some minor problems, while most people believed this to be unnecessary. Moreover, construction evaluators revealed that the cost for reconstruction was even more expensive than knocking down an old building and replacing it with a new one. The fact that school has been wasting money on unnecessary issues, including the corruption and job position issue mentioned in the articles, will cause serious problems on school institution operation. If these problems remain unsolved, the resources would not be properly used and this for sure impacts greatly on students’ right.

Question: What are some changes we can make to this situation as students?

This picture represents the corruption and also all the sneaky secrets unrevealed by the school.
