Week 4
In the article,
“A Tale of Two Campuses,” the occupy movements of UC Berkeley and UC Davis
discusses the issues with how universities and those in power react in a way
that denies the truth. With the case of the Berkeley movement the chancellor
addresses the concern of the students and tries to help those students of the
middle-class who are looking for help. Berkeley wanted to help make their
campus more affordable despite the issues with the occupy movement, yet for the
UC Davis movement, Chancellor Katehi addressed the damages that the protestors
caused. It is interesting that the Chancellor did not address the MCap system
that may help occupiers yet, she ignored it and did not want to acknowledge
that aid. Because the focus was on the mess and monetary value that the damages
would costs, seemed to distract the public and dismiss the issue of
unaffordable education. Chancellor Katehi paid to cover up and defend the
pepper spray incident, and it makes sense for her trying to deflect what
happened with the occupy movement. UC Davis being an educational institution
and having someone in control who violated several policies shows how Big
business and corporation like a public institution can become. It is unfortunate
that someone who is given this job, as someone we should be able to trust and
look to when we have problems, Katehi has failed the student body on addresses
the issues and made this University an unsafe zone.
How can we
change institutions from making a place where students are paying for education
less like a business transaction? Also how do we address malpractice of those
in superior positions and acknowledge student needs?
