In Fredrik deBoer’s article, “Why We Should Fear
University,” he tells us about how schools like universities are becoming more
like corporations instead of an establishment meant for higher learning. It has
become consumed with the outer appearance of buildings rather than putting that
money for professors. deBoer’s articles touches on topics of university
budgeting and administration. He brings to light what happens when an injustice
done by a university is being exposed. deBoer reveals the truth behind where
the student’s tuition money goes.
While reading this article, I realized that if this trend
keeps happening or continues to be covered up, the future generations of
college students would be graduating with debt they’d be paying off for more than
half of their life. Thinking about my experience in college so far, I have seen
more construction zones popping up one after another. It seems like remodeling
would never stop. When I see one fence down, another pops up. Although it is to
make our campus prettier, it also makes you question the practicality of it. Do
those building actually need to be remodeled or repaired? From what I can see,
the buildings being repaired are the ones where most school tours are given. As
tuition for college is already so high, you, as a parent or a student, would
like to know where your money is going. Would you rather have your tuition go
into buildings or professors with knowledge to share?
Question: How can we make
tuition more affordable for the future generations?
