Week 3 - Savannah Keyse

Section 2
Week 3
This week's reading "Beyond Tiger Mom Anxiety" explained that the stereotypical Tiger parenting style and the resulting stereotype of the over-achieving Asian American student have different origins and implications. Tiger parenting and influence varies depending on the parent's knowledge of colleges and applications. When a student is 1.5 or second generation their parents have more knowledge of the college application process and can be more involved with the decision process than a student who is first generation. The article also concluded that parents are not the only resource Asian American students use when making college decisions, allowing flexibility within the tiger parenting role. I thought this article was very interesting in how it explained the negative implications of having a model-student, model minority stereotype as it boxes these kids in to certain expectations that they feel they need to abide by. Asian American students and their parents do not all have the same opportunities and capital to gain the same amount of higher-education and restrictions of ethnicity, college-going generation and gender all contribute to the success of the Asian American student and the clout behind a Tiger parent.
Question: In what ways can we alter mainstream media to reduce the reproduction of the Asian American student and parent stereotype?
