Week 3
In Beyond Tiger Mom Anxiety: Ethnic, Gender, and Generational Differences in Asian American College Access and Choices, Poon and Byrd talk about the different factors that play into an Asian American student’s mindset when applying to colleges. This is very relevant to Asian American students today because it is embedded within our minds that pursuing higher education leads toward financial and personal prosperity. The article relates to this week’s theme because our parents and even individuals in society want us to conform to the model minority title through our academic/career pursuits. Through tiger mom (or parent) anxiety, students perpetuate the ideals of going to college close to home or going to colleges of their parents’ preferences opposed to the student’s.
In the article, Poon and Byrd bring up the different situations in which second generation Asian Americans face when applying to colleges. I resonated a lot with the experiences they had faced because I felt obligated to go to a “good” school because of my family’s opinions on different colleges. I also feel like this article reflects a lot of why I am in college which is to support my family, but in the end I am not completely fulfilling my own personal definition of success and have had to accommodate a new idea of success. This article really opened my eyes because I never really thought of Tiger Mom (Parent) Anxiety inducing my collegiate decisions or the fact that Asian Americans perpetuate model minority status through the colleges they attend instead of getting the education that is optimal for them somewhere else.

Question: Is it impossible for tiger mom anxiety to not exist given the model minority title always being pushed upon Asian Americans?
