Week 1

Jocelyn Centeno A02 Week 1

This article is important because it shows people color and especially women of color to pursue what they’re passionate about. As an Asian American woman myself I feel that it is essential to fight for what we deserve whether it is rightfully ours. Professor valverde proved her achievements with good evaluation reviews from her students and was honored by her peers for her work but was shut out time and time again because her ethnicity, disability, and gender. (Valverde, 2013)

Asians are usually stereotyped as being demure and a “push over”. An example of my experience with this type of stereotyping was in English class. While doing a vocabulary exercise my teacher used me as an example to explain the word demure. I vocally expressed that I was not comfortable with him branding me as the shy, quiet girl. Just because I was not particularly interested in his class and did not contribute as much as other students did not mean he had the right to call me what I consider a depreciative word. It is pertinent to understand that in my whole school of about 200 students predominantly white there were only two asian people, me and another student. After this ordeal I always remembered what demure meant and would never forget.

Questions: Was their limited positions that the university could give in turn affecting the actions of your colleagues? Why was prioritizing your other colleagues disability over yours not an issue for them? Was it because they wanted to further isolate you further? Did the competitiveness of the university tenure program essentially lead to the betrayal of some of your colleagues?

The reason I chose this video was how the lyrics talked about feminism. It mocks the way women are treated in society.

  1. Sometimes those that are oppressed take on the mentality of their oppressors. Hope that answers your questions.
