Week 1

Week 1

Professor Valverde’s article “Fight the tower: A Call to Action for Women of Color in Academia” was a very eye opening and inspirational reading material for me. It was compelling and the situations described by Professor Valverde helped me reflect on my own life as the child of immigrant parents. Growing up, I was taught to ignore mean people and not to fight back because it will just make the problem bigger or more severe. Often times, ignoring people has not helped the prejudicial situations I was in. Sometimes, it even fueled the problem to become more serious. It is at these moments where I felt alone and isolated, but after reading about how professor Valverde fought back after being bullied and marginalized by her colleagues has inspired me. It felt as if someone stood up and fought for the Asian American community. It showed me that every one, no matter their skin color, should fight for their rights and their future. There will always be some kind of obstacle along the way to achieve our goals, be it people who try to stop us or a discouraging event, but we should always voice up and fight for what is right.

Question: Why do people feel the need to demean other people? Is it done to make themselves feel better or is there other reasons for it?
