Week 1
After reading “Fight the Tower: A Call to Action for Women of Color in Academia” by professor Valverde, I had some mixed feelings. I was first shocked while reading when I realized that professor Valverde had gone through so much just because of her gender, her ethnicity, and her background. I always knew that there was injustice and unfairness for colored people, but this article made me realize it was way more than I anticipated. All the discriminations Professor Valverde encountered in academia was beyond my imagination. One that shocked me the most was the discrimination came within the discourse community of ethnic studies group. I always thought that the discrimination came from outside the colored people community. After reading the article, I understood that the white supremacy was not the only source of prejudice and discrimination.
Also, I admired Professor Valverde’s movements as fighting like a soldier. Colored people and women of color had to arm up for the incoming and existing difficulties. Being confident and having no fear should be the first step of becoming a soldier. We needed to understand that we were not inferior in any ways. We should never be embarrassed of anything that we were. As an asian student, sometimes I felt that I was unimportant and I would silence my voice myself. However, the article made me realize that our voice was our weapon. We should not give up on standing for ourselves for that might be the only way we could win the battle for now.
Question:Before fighting the discrimination coming from Non-colored people, how could we first solve the prejudice that come from colored-people? Why did the tension from in the community of people with the similar background?
