Week 3 - Kalani Murakami A02

Kalani Murakami
Week 3
Section A01

“Beyond Tiger Mom Anxiety: Ethnic, Gender and Generational Differences in Asian American College Access and Choices.” by OiYan Poon and Ajani Byrd Loyola was really interesting in seeing the statistics behind the influence's in what shape generations to come. Most people would think it would the "Asian Parents" and the stereotypes behind the fact that most Asians apply to college or whether they go to a good college or not proven by the testimonies and such.

The statistics showed how Asian women choose college due to parents being their influences while men choose to go to college because of there own decision. Makes you wonder why it ends up being like that? Does it mean Asian women value family more or do men feel like it has to be there decision?  (These are just questions and not meant to discriminate any gender.)  Also the first generation to go to college was more influenced by there high school counselors rather then family is interesting. The reason why that would be more interesting was that my sibling was more influenced by my parents because they wanted what they couldn't have for her, but it makes sense to go to high school counseling for help as the first generation child would not know who to turn to help because they would have no one to tell them the personal experience of the process themselves.

It makes me think about my personal decision as a male Asian and on why I decided to go to college while in college right now. Maybe in the past I was thinking it was my decision to show my independence, but who knows.

The label that is put on Asians for being the "smart ones" is not true at all. We may seem to maybe go to a good college because of our parents background and how they were possibly undermined and want us to succeed in ways they couldn't have in the past so they push us to succeed.
