Week 4
All of this week’s reading discussed the issues in American Universities, and one of the topics it covered were ethical issues that arise from it. Ethics and “Breaking Bad” Developing and practicing ethical skills by Amy Block Joy discussed the idea of justified morals in a situation of Walter on Breaking Bad. After reading this, it made me question the idea of whether doing something wrong is okay if it is justified in a manner where it makes up the bad part of it. In the situation of Walter selling drugs to provide for his family is something I do not believe is justified because of his illness. Drugs are something that is not only bad for you but can break families apart. Therefore, selling it for your needs is wrong to hurt another person’s life. An example I analyzed that was similar was when my friend revealed to me that she has stolen in the past. She would often steal from big corporations like Target, Sephora, or Forever 21. However, she does not steal from smaller businesses. Her reason to justify this is because since those three stores are big companies, the loss of a small item or two will not affect them. The other reason she does not steal from small companies is because she feels compassion for smaller businesses and says that losing one or two items can affect them. To me, her reasons are not morally correct. This is because no matter how big or small the corporation is, some one is getting hurt in the end. If everyone were to think of it like this, then big companies would lay off people more because of how much money they were losing and in effect this would hurt families who depend on that person to work there.
Question: Is it right to justify morals of benefiting one person while hurting the other?
