Week 1 : Fight The Tower

Professor Valverde’s story regarding the obstacles she faced as a woman of color achieving academia all while losing someone and escaping death was powerful. Specifically, I found myself relating to her similar experience with being a target for a bully. The hostile environment that her co-worker created for her resonated with me. It was surprising to learn that the person who did the bullying had an ironic self-identification with being a feminist. Though she claims she is a feminist, her actions did not justify to me that she was. Similar to Valverde’s experience, I took a job as a day camp counselor at my church and worked alongside someone who mistreated me behind my back. She was more experienced than me in this day camp, and probably felt a sense of pride that she was my superior. This person never told me directly to my face that she didn’t like me. However, she would speak negatively about me to other co-workers. This resulted in a state of confusion on how I could solve this problem. I feared confrontation. Therefore, it led on for many more weeks. After negatively impacting my life by implanting false lies, it changed me. I felt confused, alone, and doubtful of my capabilities. After reading this, it made me analyze this experience in my life and focus on what I could have done to stop this oppression.

Q: What steps can be taken to stop workplace oppression?
