Asian parents too strict?

In the article "Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior", the author explains the methods that Chinese mothers utilize to raise their child into a stereotypical successful Asian. From reading the article, although I have never seen the inside of a Chinese family, I felt that some of the descriptions of the Chinese mothers methods were greatly over-exaggerated. For example, the article states that the Chinese parents never allow their kids to have a play date, attend a sleepover, watch TV, and will no matter what make them play the piano or violin. I feel as though the Chinese method, although looking successful on the outside, is not the most successful way on the inside. Although the kids being raised by their Chinese parents would be good at whatever their parents taught them, would be missing something or would have a problem, such as possibly social problems. On the other hand, I know a ton of Caucasian American peers who are good at instruments, sports, academics, and have parents who raised them with a lot of trust and freedom.
So my question is, which method do you believe is ultimately the best method for the children's future, the Western way or  the Asian way?
