Nowadays, COVID-19 is spreading and affecting all over the world. The first case of COVID-19 was found in Wuhan, China right before Chinese New Year for which many people go back to there homes from their working places. This action enables the virus to spread faster than it should be in a normal time when people stay in their city.
I have been pay close attention to this virus since the end of January. It was spreading in China so quickly because the government did not prepare anything for it. Then more and more countries discovered COVID-19 cases including the United States and even became worse than the worst time in China. My family's attitude has been changed from not paying attention to it to being aware of it and glad that I was back to the US then worrying about the situation in China finally worrying about me in the US. They constantly told me to wear masks, but what they did not know is some Asian people were bullied because of wearing masks. According to an article posted by ABC7 New York, an Asian female student was punched by another female because of wearing a mask. The discrimination is very serious not only in the United States but also in other countries like Italy and the UK. Some media called COVID-19 to be Wuhan virus or Chinese virus; people view Asians as carriers of the Coronavirus. I feel very angry and sad towards those people because they do not know the fact of one thing but quickly give a conclusion.
After reading "Fight the Tower: A Call to Action for Women of Color in Academia" written by our professor Kieu-Linh Caroline Valverde, I feel the discrimination and the inequality to women with color, especially in the academic area. I was shocked that Professor Valverde paid a lot of effort to fight for inequality among women. As an Asian female student, I feel that I was supported because there are people fighting for us. This makes me feel optimistic about women's future, especially for women with color. This course focuses on Asian American studies, and I want to know what these people did to survive at first and thrive after and how do they perceive themselves.
