As of April 2nd,
9,191 people in California had been diagnosed with COVID-19 (CA Public Health, 2020). The Virus is spreading rapidly within the communities in America and there might be more undetected disease, resulting in an increasing number of people suffering from fear. When China first alerted the world that a virus is spreading through
their communities in December, America, however, did not get prepared for
this Coronavirus outbreak. The CDC overlooked the severity of the Virus and
suggested that people do not need to wear a face mask if they were not infected,
leading the Virus to spread out more rapidly. Under such the circumstance, the
government of America and the media did not discuss possible policies to
prevent further virus transmission. Nathan Rich analyzed how New York Times distorted the fact of Coronavirus outbreak. Still, they focused on the origin of the
Virus and blamed China for the cause of COVID-19.
As a college student, my life is also affected by Coronavirus. I found that only Chinese students wore face masks to protect themselves from the Virus. When walking on the street, some people avoided me since I wore a face mask and looked at me like I was a weirdo or a virus-carrier. According to the article “Fight the Tower: A Call to Action for Women of Color in Academia” by Valverde, Kieu-Linh Caroline, she indicated that “she experienced prejudice as a result of inter-ethnic tensions and class biases” (Valverde, 2013, pg. 389). She described how people discriminated against her due to her race. Through these stories, I think people, no matter what race they are, should unite to fight the Virus rather than discriminating against other races.
Question:
Why does one race start to discriminate against the other race when they face the same enemy?
