Week 1

For all the Chinese people, this Lunar New Year is not normal anymore. From January 2020, all the websites have been covered by the news of coronavirus. People read news about how hard doctors work to win this fight, how many people get hurt from this disaster, how the data increases dramatically every day, and so on. In the beginning, the Chinese people who live outside of China put a lot of effort into collecting resources for China and many other friendly countries started to support China. As we think the fight will be finished soon, the virus starts to appear all over the world.

Thousands of flights have been canceled that many oversea students cannot be back in their home countries. Many unfortunate and unpredictable things happen every day that torment both the physical health and mental health of people. I am so depressed that I cannot do anything and the only thing I can do is to stay at home and take care of myself. Although the current online course format makes me feel so stressful, I believe I can get used to it and succeed in this quarter. I hope I can be a person like Valverde (2019) that full of willing power, hope, and passion to overcome any difficulties, which she wrote in Fight the Tower about her own experience.
I never take this kind of course before so that I feel excited to learn the professors’ ideas about Asian Americans from the lecture. Because there are many people now discriminate against Asians because of coronavirus that Valverde (2019) has experienced discrimination before. I wish to hear about how she gets through it and how she considers this phenomenon. In addition, I expect to meet many good classmates and work and study for the class and podcast together. I cannot wait to share my opinion and hear others’ ideas for the lecture, reading, and the podcast. Because I always consider my idea is very limited and I need to know what others are thinking about.

Question: If the countries start actions against coronavirus early, will there be less impact of coronavirus?
