A month ago, I would have never foreseen the severity of the coronavirus nor the state that our country is currently in. It is outrageous that the United States is amongst the wealthiest and most advanced nations in the world, but can not provide adequate healthcare to the people. The United States had the potential to prevent the outbreak from reaching where it is at right now because we should have learned from China and Italy. Within weeks, our country climbed to the top of the list of most cases of the coronavirus. How is it that China and Italy are able to curb the rate of infection and have so many recoveries, while our situation is worsening? In my opinion, President Trump is not doing good enough to handle this situation. A cause of the rapidly increasing cases of coronavirus is due to Trump not issuing a nation wide shelter in place order. According to his press briefing, Trump believed that states should have the flexibility to issue these orders (CNN). States such as California and New York have issued a shelter in place early on, and encouraged other states to do the same. It is appalling that Trump does not see the severity of this outbreak. I believe that a nationwide order is necessary because there are cases reported in every state. Until a vaccine is made, we can all do our part to stay indoors.

As an Asian American during this time, I feel outraged at the racism that the coronavirus has caused. I do not blame people for their behavior because fear causes people to want something to blame and to feel in control again. There were attacks and hate crime toward Asian people for simply being Asian. I find myself being too afraid to wear a mask in public fearing that I will be attacked or judged. In San Francisco, there is a group of volunteers who patrol chinatown to keep people safe, and I think it is very important that people stand together at this time. After seeing how the United States is handling the situation compared to the other countries, I do not know if I am still proud to be American. How will the outcome of this pandemic change the future of our country?
