Aochen Li A04 Week1
At the beginning of 2020, the Coronavirus occurred and started to spread out all over the world. The number of people who are diagnosed as the carrier of the Coronavirus is over 800,000 in the world. As for now, the virus is still spreading at an alarming rate. At the beginning of the spread of the virus, a lot of people did not pay attention to it because they think it is only something like a normal cold. However, as the situation is being worse every day. People start wearing masks and doing some basic precautions. However, some negative voices occurred to discriminate against Asian people. Some people verbally abuse those, especially Asian people, who wear masks on the street. From my perspectives, the reason that people wear the mask is to protect themselves. But a lot of people think they wear masks because they are sick. Also, some people call the Coronavirus "Wuhan virus" or "Chinese virus". As for now, there is no evidence shows the virus comes from China. Unfortunately, some of the Asian people are discriminated against because of this. The discriminative thoughts are like the "psychological virus" in some people's minds.
According to the reading "Fight the Tower: A Call to Action for Women of Color in academia", Caroline Valverde nearly died several times and her life was finally saved. While she was fighting with the unequal treatment and for the rights and interests of women of color, her body could not endure the stress and went sick. The spirit of Caroline Valverde is one thing that we should learn from her. When we face discrimination at this particular time, we should be brave to speak out the injustice we are facing.
Question: How do Asian people protect their rights and interests properly when they encounter discrimination?
