Week 6_ Wenru Shi_ A01

Week 6 _Wenru Shi_A01
This weeks’ reading focuses on Asian American students movements. Many Asian American activists started to appear and organize movements to inspire other Asian American students to directly look at the issues existing. In the reading “Precariously Positioned: Asian American Women Students Negotiating Power in Academia”, the author, Shannon, uses her own autoethnographies to describe the experience and process of being an Asian American student activist. What impressed most is that she said to her self before the movement, “is this the right thing to do? Am I really going to fight against authority when I was raised all my life to respect those who are older and who know better?” This question was haunted in her mind, question herself whether it is a good choice or not. However, Asian Americans need people like her to be an inspiration and to stimulate such awareness.
Also, in another reading “On Some College Campuses, A Focus On Asian American Mental Health”, the author discussed the exceedingly high exceptions to Asian Americans, from families, form social strutted norms and from themselves. The model minority was formed during last century and it will last til some one break it. The socially constructed impression forces Asian Americans to strive for academia, “[leading] to perfectionism.”

Question:
Regarding to mental health of Asian Americans, how do therapies usually help Asian Americans heal the intergenerational trauma?
