Empire of Death and the Plague of Civic Violence - Darrell Y. Hamamoto
In the article, "Empire and the Plague of Civic Violence", Darrell Y. Hamamoto brings attention how militarized citizens that are relieved of service and have the weapons and how it correlates to homicides by veterans. I am not surprisingly shocked by these case because of how prevalent guns are in society today. This fact is shocking sad and that there are murdering cases all over the world. It is so frightening to hear about serial killers and mass killings. They are glorified as the person to save the day and help us, but it is sad this is not always the case. However, there is a stereotype of white male serial killers and in the perspective of how asians are perceived especially with "yellow fever". Asian women are usually fetishized and looked for erotic subjugation. However I think not all veterans are to return to be a psychopath. I have seen stories of how Veterans are treated when they return to the United States and how horribly they are treated for serving their country. I related a lot to this article because of the mass killings. The Texas Tower and how there were Vietnamese and Asian civilians. As a fellow Vietnamese American, it is scary that after the Vietnam War, homicides have increased. US Military influenced the people to have interest in having mass killings in people and particularly Asians. This scares me and made me realize that we have to be careful and think about the environment around us and what we need to do to keep one another safe.
Question: What can we do to help veterans ease back into society and social norms around us? Is there a way we can help people perceive Vietnamese differently?
