Week 5 - Regine Amparo - A03

Darrell Y. Hamamoto's chapter "Empire of Death and the Plague of Civic Violence" categorizes the different murderers and analyzes their motivation to kill. This article is especially interesting because murderers and true crimes are currently experiencing a resurgence in pop culture due to new documentaries or films recounting their stories. While I personally haven't watched any of the new media regarding murderers, I can guess the type of murderers and their motivation based on the article.

I also thought it was especially interesting to see that a lot of the serial and mass murders are recorded to have increased in modern society. I wonder if this could also be due to the lack of records from back in the day. I know that the concept of serial killers has only been recently developed. However, like stated in the article, the increase in serial and mass murderers could be a result of modern society. People in modern society are faced with more pressure from societal expectations which can negatively impact their self-esteem, forcing them to express their frustrations through extreme violent means, especially if there are no healthy ways of them to express this. Most of the murderers that are publicized are white men, who in a way are facing the most societal pressures due to increasing awareness of human and civil rights. White men are slowly losing the entitlement and authority they have possessed for centuries causing them to retaliate through violent means. Modern society has also increased the magnitudes of their murders through the advancement of weapons.

Question: Do you think the resurgence of interest in murderers in media negatively impacts consumers and the rest of society or is simply harmless entertainment? What do you think it implies about our society to have such resurgence of interest?
