Question:
You
discuss that your goal is to awaken your students to the miseducation that they
have received. How would recommend to students to approach this matter, because
it’s difficult to distinguish whether the content is truly biased or if we are being
to critical of the content being taught.
Entry:
This
week’s topic mainly focused on the importance of education on our culture and history
as Asian Americans. The idea of privileged oppressed was introduced in class.
We discussed how we as Asian Americans are educated to believe we are a model
minority, but it reality we are being conned. We are still being discriminated
whether we choose to see it or not. The image provided shows how little representation
there is of Asian Americans. Even if there were to be Asian representation in America’s
education, it is often distorted or very short. In the reading I chose, Prof.
Mouavangsou discusses her own awakening to the miseducation of her history she received
growing up. I agree with her side as I, too, believe that education is biased
and misguided. For example, in high school I remember one of my history textbook
was created in the U.S. I was reading a portion about how the U.S. was losing a
war, however, I noticed that the chapter was very small. But when there was
portion of the textbook talking about the U.S.’s win in a war, there were many
pages about it. My teacher at the time brought this up and told us that because
the textbook was made in the U.S., the creators want it so that the U.S. is
seen as a great country and that we always win. This is truly a misguidance as
the U.S. had many downfalls, but the education system within America is choosing
to hinder that information from being taught as it will show a dark past for
America. I was lucky to have a teacher to have understood this concept of
biased education, however, some students are not so lucky. Like what Prof.
Mouavangsou writes in her paper, students need to be awakened or else they will
grow throughout life with a distorted version of their history.
