Reading "The Miseducation of Hmong Americans" was very intriguing. I didn't know much about the Hmong culture prior to reading this article. The article was very accurate when it said how their culture was not taught enough in the U.S education system.
Hmong history was written and explained by American people using a eurocentric lens. It reminded me about a project I did for my Native American studies class. In that class, we had to research books about the specific tribes we were assigned to. The requirement was that books had to be written by a Native American. During my research, I noticed that the majority of the books I found were all written by white people. And when I finally found a book about the tribe that was a Native American author, I noticed the author had specifically referenced a commonly used book talking about the tribe and explain how the book was misrepresentative of the tribe and was using a eurocentric lens to describe the tribe.
I feel like I experienced that sense of awakening Mouavangsou described. After taking that class I started to question a lot of what U.S history had depicted other countries/races. I try my best to spread my knowledge to individuals around me as well so that they can realize how our education system is not perfect and can misrepresent many groups of people. The U.S education system should be inclusive of other countries's history.
