In the article,
Beyond Tiger Mom Anxiety: Ethnic, Gender and Generational Differences in Asian American College Access and Choices, by OiYan Poon and Ajani Byrd, talk about the process of students choosing which college to attend and how parents have a great influence in the decision-making. Before reading this, I was already aware that Asian parents tend to be more strict towards their children when it comes to education. Having friends with parents that used to constantly remind them about their career choices. Which path to take? Where to go? It made me question at a young age: Why are Asian parents so harsh towards their kids? Although, my parents were fairly supportive about which path I take or where I go, as long as I went to college. Being a first-generation college student I realize that the reason why many parents want their children to get a degree is because it opens more opportunities that they didn’t have as kids. Sadly, most parents grew up in a background where education was believed to be the only way to be successful. Although, it often seems like parents are harsh or lenient when it comes to their child’s education, they only want what is best their kid.

Question: When will the idea of “college is the only way to succeed” fade away from Asian parents?
