Weiqing Xu - Section A04 - Week 1 blog

As a graduating senior who is going to graduate this spring, I have lots of feelings about the Coronavirus. Most of my friends are also graduating this spring, and some of them don’t plan to go to graduate school after graduation.  People who found internship for this summer 2 or 3 months ago are being told that the companies can’t afford interns or even have already shut down. People who haven’t found internships but plan to find full-time jobs are being told that most companies are experiencing hiring freeze.

Life is also not easy for the students who are going to pursue graduate studies, especially the students who are not currently in America. Some of my international friends who come from other countries are worrying about the Visa and I20(a document which is needed to get F-1 student Visa), and also are worrying that graduate schools can’t open and plan to hold online classes instead. “If so, why should I pay so much tuition to get online education? After all, I choose to go aboard to get a feeling about another education culture.”, one of my friends told me. Numerous students have asked the graduate schools they plan to go for deferral, and many universities have offered the option to defer, such as Columbia University, New York University and the University of California, Berkeley. This action will definitely influence the 2021 students since the class size will still be controlled and the 2020 students who choose to defer have already occupied many spots.
