Gabriel Yap, ASA 002 A02, Week 1

Gabriel Yap, ASA 002 A02, Week 1

I remember during my winter quarter at Davis, I would constantly tell my roommate that I can’t
wait until spring starts. I would talk to him about how fun spring break is going to be and how it
would be just like summer break again. All of our friends are going to be back home, we would
have no obligations, and we can just have fun just like in summer break. There would be nights
where I studied until I got headaches, but reminded myself that it would all be okay once we get
on spring break. Coronavirus in China was in the news but nobody really was phased by it
because none of us thought it would even reach America, or at least the number of infections
here wouldn’t be too high. Then everything changed once we heard that schools were shutting
down.
All in only one to two days, universities all across California were being shut down early and
finals were to be taken at home. However, the most astonishing news was that universities
would be completely shutting down spring quarter on campus. I was extremely disappointed at
this news because I was hoping to make new memories in my freshman year of college that I
would remember for a lifetime.
I am certainly very upset at this shortcoming, but I acknowledge that it is rather trivial
compared to how other people are affected by the virus. Many people are losing their jobs and
of course many are dying. But the virus also affects those who do not even have it. I constantly
see on social media that Asians all over America are being discriminated against due to the
virus. In one article in The New York Times, a man reportedly told a bus to run over
Chinese-American citizen while she was on her way to the gym. This discrimination is
horrifying and I am lucky to have not experienced it yet.

I want to take this class to learn more about what it means to be an Asian in America.
As a mixed Asian-American of two different Asian ethnicities, I feel like I could relate to a
lot of things I hope to learn in this class.
