In the article, "Beyond Tiger Mom Anxiety: Ethnic, Gender and Generational Differences in Asian American College Access and Choices", OiYan Poon and Ajani Byrd did the research on what factors determine the Asian American students to do the college choice. The result of their survey is in my expectation - their parents influence the most. In Asian culture, kids need to listen from their parents, respect their parents and parents are superior than kids. Therefore, during the growing, most of the times, kids are listened/influenced from their parents and then make the decision.
Tiger parenting style is very prevalent in East Asian. It is a traditional parenting style formed from ancient times. I clearly remembered when Amy Chua published her book of "Tiger Mom", There were so much discussion, debate and following influence in China, and my parents started to view parenting style in different way. In the East Asian, education is very important for children and go to college, in parents' mind, is one of the most significant key which can assist kids to be succeed in the future. Even though Asian American college students live around by the western culture, their parents still use traditional Asian parenting style to raise their kids. Therefore, these college students will be influenced from their parents to make the choice. I have several cousins and friends who are ABC, and I can clearly see in the regular life, they listen/influence more from parents than the rest of pure American students. Moreover, because they receive/raise by two totally different cultures, they have more opportunities to access the resources and have more flexible mindsets. As OiYan Poon and Ajani Byrd mentioned in their research: Asian American students are highly achieved, more likely to go to elite universities, have more interests and highly individual motivated. Almost all my friends or family members, who are ABC, are in the top rank when they in school and workplace and lots of good qualities and interests, almost like a perfect human. After read this, I recalled the concept in the second class that we talked about what is race and what is ethnicity. In fact, from this research, the phenomenon from reality is made simultaneously by race - Asian people, and ethnicity - the tiger parenting style. When they are worked together, there is an obvious different between Asian American college students and American college students.
QUESTION: What's the race and ethnicity influence for other students who are immigrant or the following generation in immigrant family? Does the Asian American college student has the most obvious phenomenon than other group of college students?
