Week 4_Julia Wells_Section 4

As I was reading Why We Should Fear University, many of the observations seemed accurate, but then I started to think about one word that Dr. Valverde used when discussing the race court cases, and that word was jaded. As current college students, we are pessimistic or jaded in life because of all the realities we face. In Why We Should Fear University, it mentions a couple of things that stood out to me that I have thought about myself. One is people are too sensitive or overreact to the slightest emotional upset, such as being called out by a professor or the game hangman being recalled to flowerpot because hangman is too offensive. However, identifying that line of too sensitive to justifiable complaints becomes complicated when talking about race, sexuality, or religion. Another thing that was mentioned in the article was the fact that institutions have a therapist, or a sexual assault advisory center just to satisfy the public and legally protect themselves for not having one. The article mentioned that these programs do not focus on the individuals that come in who need help, they just focus on performing the minimum service that needs to be done. I feel that looking at these two issues that the article mentioned is hard to agree with 100% of the time because, as I mentioned earlier, we feel jaded in this world and it’s difficult to see the actual good without an ulterior motive behind the action. Although to the backside of it, because of all the corruption and manipulation that occurs in institutions, we cannot be blamed to be jaded and aware of the problems going on around us.

From the article of Ethics and “Breaking Bad”: Developing and practicing ethical skills by Amy Block Joy, I find it ironic that doing the right thing is different from learning what the right thing to do is. Especially when looking at Why We Should Fear University because this article mentions that universities brainwash the student population to believe in something because the student population is a threat to the universities’ policies and standings. This is a prime example of what Dr. Valverde was talking about with social engineering and the institution's strategic manipulation of dived and conquer with the student body. With all this knowledge of how Universities’ run, is there not enough solid evidence to change the system? Is the educational system to caught up in a bureaucratic business that it is too late to change?
