We always naively believe higher education administrations are agencies that we can trust and reply on, because their purpose or priority supposed to be educated and serve students. However, on the other hand, University administrations are exploiting students in many possible ways to gain access to more wealth and power.
In the article “Why We Should Fear University, Inc” Fredrik deBOER mentioned the creeping corporatism of American university is melting into the system without us even noticing. The educational system shouldn’t be something that make profits of students, who pay thousands of dollars and potentially borrowing high interest student loans to get an education. In UC Davis for example, everything is just so expensive. Food is expensive, tuitions is expensive( Well, even it is not as expensive as private school), living is expensive( comparing to other college towns, it might not be that expensive, but still for students is expensive), books and other learning tools are also extremely expensive. Personally, what I hate the most about the American University is that they keep asking us to buy a different editions of new textbook when two different editions are nearly identical. This is the reason why most of the college students are broke, because the administrations are basically corporations and profits would always be their motivations to everything.
Another thing deBOER discuss in the article is the sexual exploitation across campus.
The narrative of sexual harassment is protecting the institution itself against student activist. It is a form of suppression to make sure that the people in higher power remind control of freedom and speech. Students are not in a position to challenge the administrators who run the university, as a result, confrontations are inevitable between student activist and administrators. Even though, the effects of protesting might not be immediate, at least that is something we can do to fight for what we believe is right.
My Question: Why are there any department or government agency for regulate and manage the exploitation across university?
