Week 4 - Angela Alejandro - A04

In 2006, it was revealed that the UC Food Stamp Nutrition Education Program had been involved with fraudulent activities such as embezzlement. This information was unveiled by Amy Block Joy who was the director of the program at the time. In her chapter “Police” from her book Whistleblower, Block Joy recounts her stressful experience of relating the information to the police. These events placed Block Joy in an ethical dilemma regarding whether she should oblige the university by keeping the findings as a secret or if she should expose the wrongdoings to the public. If she keeps it a secret, she would make her superiors happy, however she would be compliant with illegal activities, however if she reveals the truth, she could be the recipient of backlash from university staff and could be placed under a lot of scrutiny. This brings up debate about whether the right thing to do really is the right thing, and whether or not you should sacrifice your well-being for the greater good. I think Block Joy was brave for risking her security in order to promote the truth and call out the university’s corruption. In the beginning of the chapter, she recalled being asked to keep the embezzlement a secret by a staff of the university, my question is, how many other people found damning evidence of corruption but were too afraid to come out with the truth?
