Week 4 - Andy Ho - A03

After reading the article Ethics and “Breaking Bad”: Developing and practicing ethical skills by Amy Block Joy, I contemplated quite a lot of times about ethical issues of our everyday lives. In life, good and bad are not so clear as black or white. Actually, our lives are a combination of good and bad. When it comes to ethics, I always think they are the same as our conscience; thus, ethics are our inner feelings and voices as a guide to the rightness or wrongness of one’s behavior. However, Amy’s article completely changed my point of view because “ethics, like other skills, need to be practiced and thus may create the necessary courage to take action.” (Joy 3). Most of us agree that having the ethical knowledge is important, but knowing the right things to do and apply them are important too. I truly enjoy reading her article because she gave us an example of a famous character from the popular TV show “Breaking Bad” named Walter White. He was a decent chemistry teacher at first, and as time went by, he became a powerful drug-lord. From his perspective, Walter thought that he had enough justifiable reasons to earn money illegally and thus slowly turned himself into a drug dealer. Is he really a desperate man who would do anything to protect his family financially? Or is he just another criminal addicted to power and money? The answer is not so clear and easy in this case. In accordance with her article, I think more of ethics-based classes should be spread in our community. Last year, I had an opportunity to take an interesting class called BIT 171 – Ethics in Biotechnology at our university. This class provides real and hypothetical case studies to illustrate ethical issues in biotechnology. I believe students who major in health and medicine should take that class since it is an essential class for your career.

Question: Is Walter White a man of integrity? Why or why not?
