Week 4 - Carissa Fejarang - A02

The theme of this week has to do with the importance and significance of speaking up when something is wrong, and how our ethical values are involved with that. In Amy Block Joy’s article, “Ethics and ‘Breaking Bad’: Developing and practicing ethical skills”, she talks about the importance of ethics and our ethical decision-making skills. She introduces the concept of ethics tutorials that work to support and build a knowledge of an organization’s dedication to a strong ethical climate so that its members can all have an idea of the organization’s morals. Joy says that in order for an organization’s members to gain enough motivation to stand up for their ethics and values, they need to gain motivation by believing that if there is a wrongdoing, it will be taken seriously and in addition, they need to gain confidence in their ethical decision-making skills.

In order to help people gain motivation, Joy developed an ethics based classroom experience in which she incorporates aspects of the show, “Breaking Bad”, in a way that would spark discussions about right and wrong, the differences between ethics, morality, and family values, and that will allow people to practice recognizing and thinking about ethical dilemmas. Usually people have a hard time making ethical decisions because fear and peer pressure act as barrier, so the main reason why Joy developed this concept is so that she can spark discussions about things like this and so that people will be able to feel more confident with the decisions that they make, especially when they are put into tough circumstances. When making ethical decisions, two ethical theories come into play: consequential ethics and action-oriented ethics. Consequential ethics is concerned about possible consequences or how things will turn out in the end, while action-oriented ethics is concerned about doing what is perceived as “right”.

Overall, in today’s society, ethical dilemmas are constantly arising which calls for a need for people to gain motivation and confidence to speak up when necessary.

Question: If more ethics-based classrooms were incorporated in more schools, would it significantly impact the overall ethics of society?
