In this week’s lecture,we discussed the topic of globalization. Globalization shows the communication and economic gloom internationally. Our society is in the time period which people how Asian American were seen as ‘modern minority’ in our contemporary society. Asian Americans are portrait as smart, successful individuals by the society.
In this week’s reading ‘Navigating Graduate Education as a First-generation,Hmong American Women:An Autoethnography‘ by Manne Moua , the author shared her experience as she encountered the events that cause collision of her Hmong side of culture and American side of culture. In the text, one of the stories that shared was about her as a graduate student attended the doctoral program, she worked as a research assistant in her first year. The jobs that she had as a research assistant were small tasks but there is not a single research project was given to her. Her advisor have questioned why Moua never ask for or being upset about not able to do any research projects. Moua was being taught from her Hmong side of the culture that she have to accept whatever tasks is given to her. This story shares another theme we talk about during the lecture, diaspora, which means the individuals who leave their homelands and settle in a different country. For diasporas, they have to adopt the culture from the new environment they are in but also practice the culture where they originated from.
