I thought that this week's readings brought up an interesting point that is not addressed very often. The author of the "Why We Should Fear University, Inc." claims there is a trend towards the corporatization of universities and students should be more aware of that. Something that was particularly surprising was the fact that some universities have more senior administers than professors. The fact that an institution, whose goal is to teach and educate people, has less professors than administers is shocking. The author states that many of the people in charge of the institutions does not really care for the students' or professors' needs. Fewer and fewer professor are even able to get a stable position at an university even after researching for so many years. Block Joy's articles only further strengthens that statement. I was especially surprised that something like embezzlement happened here at UC Davis. I never imagined that something like that would occur at a school that I was attending. These articles only further proved the point made in the week 1 lectures. In the first week, I was unsure of the meaning of corporatization. I personally did not feel or experience the things that the professor was addressing. But after reading these articles, it made me more aware and educated of the trends that are happening in the background of universities.
Question: Now that we know corporatization of universities is occuring, what can we do to deal with it?
