After
reading both of the articles for week one I learned a lot about the
difficulties that Kieu-Linh Caroline Valverde had to go through in the work
place. I was shocked when the article titled “Fight the Tower: A Call to Action
for Women of Color in Academia” started off with her telling the story of how
she went into cardiac arrest while five months pregnant and lost her child but
was lucky enough to come back to life after being clinically dead for a total
of ninety minutes. This was only the beginning though as she was denied relief
from many other events that transpired in the future. For example, when she
asked for maternity leave Some examples include when she was not allowed a
maternity leave and when she didn’t receive any type of help after revealing
she had ADHD. This article relates to what we learned in class because on the
first day we watched a video of police officers pepper spraying UC Davis
students. These two things are somewhat related because they both show how
people in power can mistreat those, especially minorities or those who don’t
have a lot of power.
Question: How
much does describing yourself as Asian-American instead of just Asian affect
how people view you?
