Week 9 - Chloriza Avila - Section A02

The article "Barack Obama as the post-racial candidate for a post-racial America: perspectives from Asian America and Hawai'i" was interesting because it touched upon details about Barack Obama that I feel aren't talked about a lot.  The article touches upon how Obama was born in Hawaii and that factors into why he is considered Asian American as well.  Situations like this make me question what exactly classifies race, or ethnicity, etc.? Is it the cultural values that one upholds, is it simply the origin that you come from, is it a combo of both, or is it more than all combined?
I also thought it was interesting that the article views from a "post-racial" perspective, however, are we in a post-racial society?  Just because we are pass the age of slavery and racial segregation does not mean that this does not still occur in the world.  As a matter of fact, I feel that it is even more apparent in the world that we live in today but is just performed in a different way.

To start, I am not against Obama in any way, and actually appreciated his presidency. At one point Obama stated "I am one of you" because he comes from this "Asian-American" background.  This inspired many to feel as if they were supported because they had a president that was just like them.  However, I don't feel that Obama was necessarily "one of us" just because he had the opportunities to fight for the Asian-American community.

Question: Do you believe that Obama should be classified as Asian American just because he was born in Hawaii?
