Week 10
“Academics Awaken: Power, Resistance, and Being Woke” concluded main points that people should be aware about in academia. In the beginning, the author talked about how there are many injustices that occur in academia, but many times we internalize them and accept them as the norm. As a result, we assume that the inability to achieve success is due to our own individual downfall, instead of looking at the bigger picture. This relates closely with another concept mentioned in this work, which talked about how people were taught to not question. One quote from Star Wars: Clone Wars stuck out to me, “I used to believe that being a good soldier meant doing everything they told you. That’s how they engineered us.” It is very upsetting that in a system that is supposed to teach their students how to question and innovate, it is looked down upon to question the system itself. This is prevalent in elementary and middle schools also. They would have strict rules, but never explained why those rules were put into place. When my former classmates asked why these strict rules were put into place, they said it was for our safety and because these rules apply in the “professional” world. Instead of going more into depth, they expected us to believe them, which is what the whole class did. We conformed to the system without much questioning and resistance. I realized that I kept this mindset for a very long time, since it became second nature. The authors also talked about how Asian American women would be shamed into silence if they do question the injustices and this would translate into isolation. Thus, I think it is important to create a safe community that fights against the injustices in academia. Therefore, we should redefine power and allow those who face injustice to go against the system.
Question: How can we teach youth to question the injustices in academia and fight for their rights at a young age?
