Asian American Representation in Media
Asian-Americans are a diverse group of people and have a lot of different cultural backgrounds. Despite the rising number of Asian-Americans in the country, the portrayal of Asian-Americans has not reflected the diversity of one of the largest minority groups in the country. Furthermore, Asian-Americans are often cast into stereotyped roles, meaning they are constantly portrayed as a particular kind of people, pigeonholing a very diverse group into several, smaller, and more offensive character types. While recently this trend has been slowly starting to change, and hopefully continues to, it is still an ongoing issue that we feel does not have the recognition it should.
In the United States, Asian Americans are a large group of people with diverse and distinctive ethnic, and cultural backgrounds. However, Hollywood mainstream films do not represent asian americans in an accurate way, clumping asian americans as one group of people with no distinctions. The roles of asian americans in films reflect stereotypes pushed upon different groups of asian americans. Stereotypes such as; martial artist, nerd, prodigy, taxi driver, introverted, model minority, overall create a sense that asian americans are the ‘other’ in American society despite their contributions. These stereotypes have been, and continue to be perpetrated by Hollywood and media productions.
Our objective was to determine whether or not the general public was aware of these issues, as well as provide and create an informational presentation with which the general public could be educated.
