As I learn more about issues in the Asian Americans society,
I found out that there is injustice everywhere. The Asian "model
minority" stereotype is not for the better, but it separates the Asian
Americans with the others. In her
Autobiography, professor Valverde wrote that the inequality and injustice in
the academia were socially engineered by certain groups of people to only bring
them benefits. The educational institutions that were supposed to be a haven
for students and educators became a place of politics and deceit. While most
people do not realize about the injustice in the academia, we as Asians that
are often considered as the "perfect pawns" must fight against the
inequality in our community. As we help others to make sense of the social engineering
in our society, we will help ourselves in living in a better future. Being an
international student also make me recognize the flaws in the education system
where minorities are not given equal rights and opportunities. Similar but
different to the United States, my country openly discriminates against the
minorities and nobody has the right mind to fight against it. The act of meritocracy
is not evident in the system, and yet people are unaware of this. How do we as
students in a higher education take part in this revolution and be “woke”?
