Week 9
In the readings this week, I found the article "Barack Obama as the Post Racial Candidate for a Post-Racial America: Perspectives from Asia America and Hawaii" the most interesting. Jonathan Y. Okamura, the writer, speaks about the details of Obama's campaigns and how he influenced the perspectives of America as a whole as well as influenced the Asian American and Pacific Islander community. Not only was Obama seen as the post-racial candidate of the post-racial nation but also the first African American candidate. But according to this article, to the Asian community, he was seen as one of them and the first Asian American candidate as well. I found this incredibly interesting. Personally, I really followed and believed in Barack Obama as a president and candidate. I always thought to myself that this was it. That America was improving and becoming more racially open, inclusive, and fair. But to think that he was already going to do so many great things and already influencing many African Americans, he was also influencing other races. It was just so eye-opening to read this because I would have never thought of all of the racial communities, Asian Americans would take him in as their own because of the characteristics that make Barack Obama apart of the AAPIs. Another thing I found interesting was the fact that Obama even considered himself apart of the Asian American community and one of them. He gets this idea from the fact that he was born and raised in Hawaii, surrounded himself in college with Indians and Asians, and having siblings who are half Indonesian. I think overall he was a great candidate and president and during the times he was in office our world was doing great. I do not necessarily believe that that is now but if we take a look at the times then versus the times now we can see how Obama and the president now affected and continue to affect the different groups around the world. I really enjoyed this article!

Question:
Did President Barack Obama do much to help out the Asian American community as well as actual Asian countries during his 2 terms as President?
