Week2 Bradley Kitaoka Section:A04

In week two of this class we will be talking about the myths of Asian Americans in higher education. As seen in the article titled “Asian Americans and Affirmative Action: From Yellow Peril to Model Minority and Back Again”, we see how society sticks Asian Americans into this constant back and forth between being not White enough to be grouped with White people as well as being too White to be considered a minority. Because of this uncertainty on where to place Asian Americans it hurts them as they can be rejected by both White people and by people of other minorities. This can be seen when Nancy Chung Allred says that African Americans and Hispanics can resent Asian Americans because of their success. While White people also don’t want to claim Asian Americans as part of their group because they still view them as foreigners. This also hurts Asian American because they do not receive the same privileges as White people get as well as the additional help that African Americans and Hispanics get for being a minority.

The question I have is that since society puts Asian Americans into this limbo in between groups what would be the best way to solve this uncertainty and how would it be done?
