Week 2 – Wenjie Xie A02

Asian American becomes the fast-growing racial group recently in US society, especially in California, and UC colleges specifically. I am surprised by the percentage of Asian faces on campus year by year. The Asian culture emphasizes the influence of education on children’s life achievement. The society thinks that Asian parents have their typical standard of success and make decision for their children in college choice. However, it might not be true. In the article “Beyond Tiger Mom Anxiety: Ethnic, Gender and Generational Differences in Asian American College Access and Choices” by OiYan Poon, the researchers explore the potential factors that affect Asian American’s college choice. According to the research, we could view this sensitive issue from a more objective perspective. It is not always Asian parents that determine which college their children should go. Many other factors also matter, such as "institution’s academic reputation, family approval, affordability, and career plans". According to my experience, I think my consoler in the high school provided a fundamental support for my college choice. And I made my choice of both school and major based on my interest. After reading this article, I realize the best way to reduce the stereotype of a culture is to show the diversity inside that culture.

Question:

Is there any difference between first generation and 1.5 or second generation of Asian-American parents?
