This reading of “The
Time to Fight is Now”1: Asian American Women, Academia’s Socially Engineered
“Privileged Oppressed,” Go Rogue is an
introduction into the inequality and challenges that Asian American faces in academia,
and this sparks another issue of Asian American being discriminated
academically. Asian American is a minority in the US, but rather
than perceived as just a weak minority, such African American or Hispanic
America, Asian American is model minority which silences the voice of Asian
America, making them fear of anger, fear of “breaking” the model minority frame,
such that Asian American should be a “good kid”, no rebels, no protests, and effectively
work in the position they are assigned to. Asian American used as a social
engineering tactic, to be used as a buffer between White and Black Americans.
Specifically, in Introduction to Fight The Tower,
Asian American women faces so many issues with tenure, being able to have equal
opportunities where they are at least as qualified as others but was
disappointed because of their ethnicity which defines their identity, who they
are. According to Valverde, there are people started to fight back, not
fighting for just academia equality, but fighting for a social structure changes
that enable equality for all in long term and stable future, and this can be
achieved through our own awareness of the issues, to “staywoke”, through knowledge,
and no fear of anger, and to be able to take action. To achieve this goal, this
will require a lot of courage and determination, lucky for us, this writing of
Valverde and Dariotis empower possibility and hope of achieving the goal.
