Question:
Is
education influenced by capitalism or the race/ethnicity of the capitalist who
supports it?
Entry:
In
this week’s lecture, the topic of education and what is really driving
education was discussed. The reading ‘The Untold History of Modern US Education’
talks about this. It touches upon that education has not really been about learning
but is really a capitalistic strategy. Many famous people in capitalism such J.P.
Morgan, Carnegie, and Vanderbilt were mentioned. These capitalist have the support
and funds to shift education in a biased view whether it be a political, social,
or racial view. The image added shows this by depicting a school with a sign ‘Mission
of Capitalism’. If capitalists are driving education to support their own
ideals, then in turn those in the education system are going to support it too.
With the system turning into a business, racial views are unconsciously being
implemented. For example, in most of my classes related to STEM, a majority of
the students are Asian. In my opinion, the university is strategically picking
a bigger population of Asian students not only for money, but also for the
stereotypical ‘Asians are smart in STEM’ idea, because if the university has a
high ranking academically then more money and donations would be donated or
funded to keep it running. The education system is a business, but it doesn’t
have to be a racial statement.
