Question:

With Asians being termed ‘Model Minorities’, why are we still being seen this way? Is it due to the general Asian population feeding into expectations and stereotypes or is it the way society is being educated? Who is more responsible?

Entry:
This week’s topic focused on the topic of Race vs. Ethnicity and the impact of education. The reading “The Time to Fight is Now” explains the idea of the racial tower or hierarchy. In lecture, it was discussed that among the minorities in North America is African Americans or ‘Blacks’ are on the bottom of this racial hierarchy in terms of education, employment, etc. while Asian Americans are seen as ‘model minorities’ or in the top in terms of education, employment, etc. However, the reading chosen shows that Asian American Women are on the bottom of the racial hierarchy for employment. So why does this occur if North America’s view of Asians is that were a top minority? The problem is race. North America is the land of opportunity and success to those outside of it. Immigrants are given the idea that if you work hard, listen to what is told of you, later in the future you will succeed. This is why our race has become an inferior race. We listened so well regardless of our model minority title, we are still experiencing discrimination without even knowing it. Asian Americans are being accepted into schools in large quantities due to our model minority status. The image provided shows most of the races within North America. The article where the image was sourced states that the North American population of Asians is 4.4% and the population of White Americans is 74%. Regardless of these statistics, many colleges have an Asian American population of about 30% or more. This shows that the education system is feeding into our model minority title. North America needs to change its view of race and ethnicity in.
